How to Manage Private Yoga Clients Alongside Group Classes

Many yoga instructors start with group classes and eventually add private sessions. The challenge is that these two sides of your business operate very differently - different pricing, different booking flows, different expectations. Without a clear system, the administrative work can quickly eat into the time you would rather spend teaching.

Here is how to keep both running smoothly without doubling your workload.

Separate your booking flows

Group classes and private sessions should not share the same booking process. A student signing up for a Tuesday vinyasa class needs a simple, fast checkout. A private client needs to select a time that works for both of you, possibly fill out an intake form, and understand your cancellation policy.

Keep these experiences distinct. Your group class schedule should be publicly visible and bookable with minimal friction. Private sessions should have their own booking flow - ideally one that lets clients see your real-time availability and book without a back-and-forth email chain.

Price with intention

Private sessions carry a fundamentally different value proposition than group classes. You are offering undivided attention, personalized sequencing, and flexibility. Your pricing should reflect that.

A common structure is to offer single private sessions at a premium rate, with a slight discount for packages of four or eight sessions. This encourages commitment from your clients while giving you more predictable income. Keep your private rates separate from your group pricing so there is no confusion - and do not be afraid to charge what the one-on-one experience is worth.

Keep session notes for private clients

One of the biggest advantages of private yoga instruction is continuity. You can track a client's progress, remember their injuries, and build sequences that evolve over time. But that only works if you keep notes.

After each private session, take two minutes to jot down what you covered, what the client responded well to, and anything to revisit next time. This does not need to be elaborate - a few bullet points is enough. Over time, these notes become incredibly valuable for both you and your client.

Block your time strategically

When you teach both group and private sessions, your calendar can become a patchwork of commitments with awkward gaps in between. Be intentional about when you offer private sessions. Many instructors designate specific days or time blocks for privates - for example, mornings on days when their group classes are in the evening.

This approach protects your energy, reduces travel between locations, and makes it easier for clients to find available times. It also ensures that private sessions do not cannibalize the prep and recovery time you need around group classes.

Track client preferences and history

Private clients expect a personalized experience. Keep a record of each client's goals, physical limitations, preferred styles, and any props or modifications they use regularly. When a client feels like you remember the details, it builds trust and keeps them coming back.

Stillpoint makes it straightforward to manage both sides of your practice in one place - group scheduling, private bookings, client notes, and payment tracking - so you spend less time on logistics and more time teaching.
